On July 24th, several rounds of severe thunderstorms developed across southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa, and southwest Wisconsin.  The first round occurred between 9:00 AM and 2:30 PM.  Meanwhile additional rounds of severe thunderstorms moved repeatedly across northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin between 3:00 PM  and 7:00 PM.

Mid Morning to Mid Afternoon Severe Thunderstorms:

The most organized type of thunderstorm, a supercell, tracked southeast across the area from late morning through afternoon hours. The storm began and grew rapidly in Owatonna, Minnesota and then tracked southeast just south of Rochester and into northeast Iowa to near Cresco and Calmar. The storm continued southeast affecting Fayette and Clayton counties and the communities of Volga and Edgewood.

The supercell is a long-lived thunderstorm and is created when winds exhibit a certain profile above the surface and enough instability exists in the atmosphere. It is fairly rare but when it does occur, it produces severe weather a large percentage of the time. This storm produced large hail just under baseball-sized during its life and sporadic wind damage from 65 mph winds.  The map below shows the wind (W) and hail (H) reports.

July 24, 2009 Severe Storm Reports from 900 AM through 230 PM

Below is a radar movie from about 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM showing the supercell storm. The supercell is the bright circular storm, with plenty of pink and purple colors, tracking southeast during the loop. You can also see the warning boxes (called "polygons") issued to the public in yellow by the National Weather Service. Most warnings were issued out ahead of the storm to provide time for people to prepare for this severe storm (this is called "lead time"). The NWS in La Crosse averaged 27 minutes of lead time to the public for the list of storm reports at the end of this story.

OFFICERS REPORTED ABOUT 3 INCHES OF WATER ACROSS HIGHWAY
            3 IN SOUTHWEST CLAYTON COUNTY.

Mid Afternoon to Early Evening Severe Thunderstorms:

Shortly after the supercell moved southeast into east central Iowa, additional rounds of severe thunderstorms quickly developed across northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin.  These thunderstorms produced large hail (up to softball size) and damaging winds from about 3:00 PM through 7:00 PM.  As these thunderstorms moved repeatedly across Fayette and Winneshiek counties in northeast Iowa and Crawford and Grant counties in southwest Wisconsin, the very heavy rain (nearly 2 inches an hour) caused flooding along small creeks, in urban areas and fields, and mud/rock slides in Crawford County.  One of these rock slides closed down Highway 35 south of Lynxville (Crawford County - Southwest Wisconsin) briefly. The map below shows the wind (W), hail (H) and flooding (F) reports.

Severe Storm Reports from July 24, 2009

Below is a radar movie from this event showing several rounds of supercell storms moving southeast across northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin. The supercells are the bright circular storm, with plenty of pink and purple colors, tracking southeast during the loop. You can also see the warning boxes (called "polygons") issued to the public in yellow by the National Weather Service. Most warnings were issued out ahead of the storm to provide time for people to prepare for this severe storm (this is called "lead time").

Precipitation Totals:

Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms brought much needed rain to the region from mid morning Friday (July 24th) through the early morning hours of Saturday (July 25th). The heaviest rains (1 to 3 inches) fell from Twin Cities southeast into eastern Iowa and southwest Wisconsin. Meanwhile the remainder of the region saw less than an inch.  Rainfall rates were up to 2 inches an hour and this caused flooding along small creeks, in urban areas and fields, and mud/rock slides in Crawford County.  One of these rock slides closed down Highway 35 south of Lynxville (Crawford County - Southwest Wisconsin) briefly. The image below shows radar estimated precipitation which has been adjusted by actual rain gauge reports from 7:00 AM July 24th through 7:00 AM July 25th.

Radar estimated precipitation from 7 AM July 24th through 7 AM July 25th
