March 1-2, 2002 Snow Totals

On February 28th, a strong cold front moved through much of the upper Midwest. Temperatures behind the front fell well into the single digits above zero across much of the region. By late in the day, the front became stationary just to the south and east of the area as low pressure began to develop over the Colorado plains. The front remained nearly stationary during much of the day on March 1st, helping to keep the cold air in place over the upper Midwest. During the evening hours of the 1st, the low moved from eastern Colorado to near the Kansas/Missouri border. Snow develop north of the low and began moving into northeast Iowa during the late afternoon and evening hours. The snow then gradually overspread southeast Minnesota and southwest Wisconsin. The low continued to move along the stationary front on the 2nd, moving from the Kansas/Missouri border into northern Indiana by the evening of the 2nd. Snow continued to fall across the entire region through much of the 2nd. Moderate to heavy snow occurred for a while as the low passed through Illinois with portions of northeast Iowa and southwest and central Wisconsin receiving totals in excess of 6 inches. A band of 9+ inches of snow occurred across central Wisconsin from just north of the Dells area east toward Appleton. Another band of 9+ inches fell northwest of Madison, with yet another area extending north from the Rockford, Illinois region to southwest of Milwaukee.
