Severe Storms - Flooding of May 29, 2013

River Graphs Storm Pictures Local Storm Reports Rainfall Reports

After several days of cool and rainy weather, a warm front moved through the area on May 29, 2013.  This allowed warmer and more humid air to build an unstable atmosphere during the afternoon and evening hours.  Thunderstorms erupted during the early afternoon across northeast Iowa and developed a line of storms that swept northeastward with damaging wind, torrential rains, and at least one tornado.

There were numerous storms that produced wind gusts of 50 to 70 mph, which led to microburst damage.  This knocked down farm buildings, sheds, trees, and damaged roofs in a wide area from northeast Iowa, into southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.  In addition, heavy rains of over 4 inches fell causing fairly widespread flooding and significant rises on area rivers by late evening.

A small tornado touched down near Garnavillo, IA (Clayton Co.) during the late afternoon and crossed the Mississippi River into southwest Wisconsin before dissipating near Patch Grove, WI (Grant Co.).  Damage was confined to trees, a few campers and buildings.  The preliminary rating was EF0 with winds of 70-80 mph.

Other damage paths included areas south and southeast of Viroqua, WI (Vernon Co.) where farm buildings, trees, and garages sustained damage.  Parts of Richland County, WI also experienced similar type "downburst" damage with distinct, narrow paths.  One path of damage was along Highway 80 and into the south end of Richland Center where several businesses were damaged, including the walls of a warehouse.

The flooding subsided a bit the following day, but additional storms led to more warnings and sporadic high wind reports on May 30th.
