National Weather Service meteorologists surveyed damage across Macon and Lee Counties and the assessed damage that was consistent with a tornado. A tornado touched down in northeast Macon County near Notasulga, east of County Road 81. The tornado caused damage to approximately a dozen mobile homes along County Road 54. The tornado continued northeastward into Lee County and caused extensive tree damage which resulted in damage to dozens of homes and mobile homes on the western side of Auburn. Several residences were totally destroyed. The tornado crossed the southern edge of Auburn University's Campus and caused damage to homes and the baseball facilities at Auburn High School. The tornado crossed Interstate 85 at US Highway 280 and continued northeastward toward Lake Harding. Along the lake, widespread trees damage occurred and several homes and boathouses were also damaged. The tornado moved across the lake and into Georgia. The tornado moved across Harris County Georgia for another 26 miles and strengthened to an EF2. Therefore, the total tornado path length was 59 miles long and was 880 yards wide in Georgia. The tornado was rated an EF1 in Alabama and an EF2 in Georgia. One injury occurred in Alabama and two occurred in Georgia.
