Event Summary
A National Weather Service Damage Assessment Team has surveyed the storm damage in Blount County. It has been determined the damage was the result of a tornado. The tornado has been rated an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. Damage estimates were consistent with winds around 90 mph.
The tornado touched down south of US Highway 278 north of Blountsville and just east of the Cullman County line. This location was near County Roads 683 and 684. Initial damage consisted of minor roof and gutter damage. The tornado traveled eastward and crossed Black Road where a metal, open-ended garage had its roof pulled off. Another home had a portion of its roof removed and a large section of privacy fence was toppled. The most significnat damage was near the intersection of County Roads 49 and 6 where several large hardwood trees were uprooted. The tornado lifted near County Road 6 just east of Wilson Road where a metal building suffered damage. The tornado damage path was 1.7 miles long and was 150 yards wide at its widest point.
