February will be remembered for the record warmth that occurred
throughout the month. It was the warmest February on record at
both Augusta and Columbia. Both stations set several daily record
temperatures during the month. Rainfall during the month was near
normal across the western and northern Midlands, but below normal
across the central and southern Midlands along with much of the
Central Savannah River Area. Heavy rainfall across western and
central North Carolina and the Upstate on February 4th into early
February 5th produced river flooding along the Congaree River.
The last river flooding events occurred back in May of 2017.

Augusta and Columbia.

At Augusta:
1. 60.0 degrees in 2017
2. 58.8 degrees in 1927
3. 58.5 degrees in 1890
4. 58.3 degrees in 2017
5. 57.2 degrees in 1884

At Columbia:
1. 59.8 degrees in 2018
2. 57.6 degrees in 1927 and 1890
4. 57.2 degrees in 2017
5. 56.1 degrees in 1990


...Augusta Average Temperatures...

The average temperature at Augusta Regional Bush Field for
February was 60.0 degrees or 10.9 degrees above the normal of
49.1 degrees.

...Columbia Average Temperatures...

The average temperature at Columbia Metro Airport for February
was 59.8 degrees or 11.3 degrees above the normal of 48.5
degrees.

...Orangeburg Average Temperatures...

The average temperature at the Orangeburg County Airport for
February was 59.8 degrees or 10.2 degrees above the normal of
49.6 degrees.


...Augusta Rainfall...

Augusta Bush Field received 1.57 inches of rainfall during
February. Normal is 3.92 inches.

...Columbia Rainfall...

Columbia Metro Airport received 1.61 inches of rainfall during
February. Normal is 3.61 inches

...Orangeburg Rainfall...

Orangeburg County Airport received 1.26 inches of rainfall during
February. Normal is 3.59 inches

Augusta...
20th...New record high temperature. High was was 83 degrees,
previous record was 82 in 2014.

21st...New record high minimum temperature. Low was 66 degrees,
previous record was 59 in 1991. Also the warmest February low
temperature for the month, previous was 65 in February 27, 1944.


21st...New record high temperature. High was 86 degrees, previous
record was 80 in 2011. Also, tied the warmest February high
temperature for the month, also occurred in February 22, 1962.

22nd...Tied the record high temperature of 83 degrees set in 2011.

24th...Tied the record high temperature of 84 degrees set in 2017.


COLUMBIA...
11th...New record high minimum temperature. Low was 62 degrees,
previous record was 59 in 1932.

16th...New record high minimum temperature. Low was 64 degrees,
previous record was 63 in 1990.

21st...New record high minimum temperature. Low was 67 degrees,
previous record was 60 in 1990. Also, the warmest February low
temperature for the month, previous was 65 in February 10th, 1939
and February 18th, 1891.

21st...New Record high temperature. High was 83 degrees, previous
record was 81 in 1997.

22nd...New record high minimum temperature. Low was 63 degrees,
previous record was 58 in 2017.

22nd...New record high temperature. High was 83 degrees, previous
record was 81 in 2011.

23rd...Tied the record high temperature of 82 degrees set in 1962.

24th...New record high temperature. High was 83 degrees, previous
record was 82 in 2017.

25th...New record high minimum temperature. Low was 63 degrees,
previous record was 61 in 1993.



Events for February 2018...

February 4th...
Heavy showers and a few strong thunderstorms produced strong winds
across portions of the Midlands and CSRA. Tree were reported down
in Richland County and Columbia County.

February 8th - 11th...
Heavy rainfall on the 4th and 5th of February across western and
central North Carolina and the Upstate produced high flows and
minor river flooding along the Congaree River.

The Congaree River at Columbia (COLS1), crested at 11.27 feet on
the 9th. Action stage for Columbia is 10.0 feet and Flood stage is
19.0 feet. This produced some flooding along the Cayce and West
Columbia Riverwalk.

The Congaree River at Carolina Eastman (CEAS1) crested at 116.8
feet on the 9th. Flood stage is 115.0 feet. This produced some
minor river flooding.

The Congaree River at the Congaree National Park (GADS1) crested
at 15.98 feet on the 10th. Flood stage is 15.0 feet. This produced
some minor river flooding. Flooding occurred in portions of the
Congaree National Park that included the boardwalk and some
trails. The stream gage along Cedar Creek within the park crested
at 8.52 feet on the 11th.

February 19th - 24th...
Cool high pressure and abundant low level moisture across the area
produced several days with dense fog across the Midlands and CSRA
each morning. Many areas reported visibilities less than one
quarter mile.

ENSO (EL NINO SOUTHERN OSCILLATION)...
...La Nina Advisory...

Equatorial sea surface temperatures are below average
across the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. A transition from La
Nina to ENSO-neutral is most likely during the Northern Hemisphere
Spring. There is a 55% chance of ENSO-neutral during the March
through May season.
