Late May Severe Storms Strike Northeast Ohio/Northwest PA... Flooding Impacts Several Counties

May 30-31, 2015

A cold front extending from a low pressure system over Canada moved across the Great Lakes region on May 30. A secondary low pressure system developed over the central Mississippi River Valley with the tail end of the cold front and moved across Ohio on May 31.

On May 30, temperatures soared into the mid 80s by the afternoon and moisture across the region was once again abundant with high dew points and precipitable water values of 1.7” or higher across the area. The cold approached the area from the north as it moved across Lake Erie. Thunderstorms triggered ahead of this cold front and became severe as they reached the northern counties of Ohio. Several storms that become severe produced wind gusts up to 70 mph. The worst damage from the storms occurred in Brooklyn, Parma, and the Old Brooklyn neighborhood of Cleveland where several large trees were snapped and a wall of a building collapsed. A flash flood warning was issued for Cuyahoga County for the training nature of these storms.  Cleveland Hopkins Airport received 1.41” of rain and Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport received 1.67” of rain, including 1.10” from 5-7pm.

On May 31, the rainfall continued as the secondary low moved south of the county warning area. Many areas received another half inch of rain or more. Crawford County, PA received the most rain with localized areas getting up to 2” of rain by late afternoon. Areas around Conneaut Lake were inundated with water, causing water to enter some homes and a bridge on State Route 285 to be closed due to water. Elsewhere, high water undermined a culvert on Law Road in Grafton Township, causing the road to be closed.
