NOAA Awards Grant to Sojourner-Douglass College to Establish Atmospheric Science Education Program

John Jones, Deputy Assistant Administrator, NWS, speaks at an October 2, 2003, ceremony marking the award of a grant to establish an Atmospheric Science Education program at Sojourner-Douglass College in Baltimore, MD.

Alice H. Thomas, Executive Assistant to the President for Director-Sponsored Programs and Applied Research, Sojourner-Douglass College, speaks to the assembly.

Frederick Douglass, IV, the great-great grandson of the famous abolitionist, orator, and statesman, said, "To have a college that bears the name of my great-great grandfather be at the front of such a breakthrough program is reflective of his pioneering spirit."

NOAA and Sojourner-Douglass College also will develop a state-of-the-art weather laboratory on campus, where minority students can learn about atmospheric science all year. "With this concept, the students will learn the basics when they are young, and advance their knowledge as they get ready for college," said Jones.
