NWS Salutes Ham Radio Partners

Reno, NV, hosted one of the largest gatherings of volunteers for its Fifth Annual Skywarn Appreciation Day activities on December 6, 2003. After more than 24 hours of grueling tasks, the volunteers still managed a smile and thumbs up for a job well done.

Frank Nance, 78 years old, celebrated his birthday during Skywarn Recognition Day activities in Reno. Nance brushed up on his skills by transmitting several messages via Morse Code.

Reno's most senior and junior Skywarn members participated in their third recognition day. Frank Nance has been a HAM radio operator for 62 years. Jordan Anise, a sophomore at McQueen High School in Reno, has participated in ham operator programs since he was 13. Nance explains to Anise how to use the various modes of operation and the frequencies on the ham radio.
