South Texas High Wind And Severe Weather Event: April 11th, 2017

On the afternoon of April 11, 2017, a slow moving cold front pushed south through Central Texas. Most of the shower and thunderstorm activity remained well north of South Texas that morning, as the upper level disturbance was well to the north of our area. However, the morning sounding at Corpus Christi on April 11th showed plentiful moisture with only a weak cap (or "lid") on the atmosphere. Thus, daytime heating would be needed to break the cap before showers and thunderstorms would develop.

As daytime heating ensued, showers and a few thunderstorms began to develop, mainly over the Texas Hill Country closer to the stationary frontal boundary and the upper level energy. Showers and thunderstorm activity increased by early afternoon across the San Antonio County Warning Area due to ongoing frontal forcing and upslope flow. During the afternoon, there were isolated strong to severe thunderstorms across the San Antonio County Warning Area. Some of these storms brought much cooler air to the surface, and allowed the frontal boundary to move southeast and approach South Texas.

KCRP Radar Loop - 151 PM CDT Through 931 PM CDT April 11, 2017

The leading edge of the thunderstorms reached northern La Salle County around 130 PM CDT, as daytime heating created strong instability and eliminated the cap on the atmosphere. Severe storms continued to track south through the Brush Country, Victoria Crossroads and the northern Coastal Plains, with the strongest storms over eastern Webb County and La Salle County. Severe thunderstorm warnings were posted for these counties during the late afternoon and evening, as radar imagery and algorithms were estimating hail size anywhere from quarter (1 inch) to tennis ball (2 1/2 inch) sized hail.

The line of thunderstorms continued to move south across the area and eventually reached the southern Brush Country, Coastal Plains and Coastal Bend just after 7 PM CDT. Heavy rainfall was also associated with these storms. Radar estimated rainfall totals across portions of Webb County ranged from 2 to 4 inches. This resulted in a Flash Flood Warning being issued for southwestern Webb County. Local law enforcement reported that vehicles were stranded in high water in parts of Laredo.

In addition to the line of severe thunderstorms, a “wake low” developed behind the main line of storms. This type of phenomena refers to an area of relative low pressure that forms behind the thunderstorm activity, with significant pressure rises near the storms. Strong pressure rises were observed at Bob Hall Pier as the storms moved through, with pressures falling rapidly afterwards. This wake low phenomenon is known to produce strong and gusty winds, because the atmosphere compensates or adjusts itself from having thunderstorms rapidly move through an area. This relative area of low pressure is best observed as a rise/fall couplet on a surface analysis map. During the evening hours on April 11th, the wake low formed near Rockport and slowly slid to the south into Deep South Texas. The strongest winds were confined to the Southern Coastal Bend where parts of Nueces County received gusts of 50 mph or greater. The highest reported wind speed was 53 mph, occurring about 2 miles south of Waldron Field. (see the "Wind and Local Storm Reports" sections). Rapid changes in pressures and winds were also observed near the coast and over the offshore waters, including the buoy 45 nautical miles SE of Baffin Bay, as well as the buoy 90 nautical miles east of Port Aransas (see the "Marine" section).
