Coastal Bend Heavy Rain and Flooding Event: May 15th - 16th, 2016

The Coastal Bend, specifically Kleberg, Nueces, San Patricio, Aransas, and Refugio counties, experienced a significant heavy rain event that began on the morning of May 15th, 2016 and ended on the morning of May 16th, 2016. As much as 10 to 15 inches of rainfall occurred during this timeframe across the south side of Corpus Christi, Flour Bluff, Ingleside, Aransas Pass, and Bayside. This amount of rainfall produced widespread flooding in these communities. Several hundred homes were flooded in Ingleside and Aransas Pass. Numerous roads and highways were closed due to the high water. Numerous water rescues occurred in San Patricio and Nueces counties. Many schools and businesses either delayed opening or remained closed. Elsewhere across the Coastal Bend, widespread 5 to 10 inches of rainfall occurred.

This heavy rain event was actually comprised of two separate rain episodes. The first rain episode occurred during the daylight hours on May 15th and diminished by 600 PM. The second but more intense rain episode began developing around 630 PM on May 15th across Nueces and Kleberg counties. Through the remainder of the evening, rain and embedded thunderstorms had expanded to the other Coastal Bend counties of San Patricio, Aransas, and Refugio. The rainfall intensity continued to increase through 200 AM CDT on May 16th across most of these 5 Coastal Bend counties. Rainfall rates as high as 3 inches per hour were noted during this overnight period across portions of these counties.

The heavy rain event was aided by several meteorological factors. A nearly stationary front was located across South Texas along with another developing boundary near the coast. This second boundary helped anchor the rainfall near the coastal counties as warm moist unstable air from the Gulf of Mexico was continuously lifted upward. Another favorable factor was an approaching upper level disturbance from the west. This disturbance along with latent heat release aided in the development of a surface low pressure area near Corpus Christi. As a result, there was enhanced moisture convergence for many hours along the coast. Abundant moisture was also available throughout this entire event. A Pacific tap of moisture was also noted with this event and is typical of heavy rain events in South Texas. This copious moisture along with relatively weak steering currents aided in this highly efficient process of producing heavy rainfall over the same area.

Sufficient low level shear was present on May 15th to support waterspout development over the coastal waters. One such waterspout was observed over Corpus Christi Bay.
