October 24th, 2015 South Texas Heavy Rain Event

A number of factors came together to produce a heavy rain event across South Texas on October 24th. Abundant gulf moisture was already in place as deep onshore flow had been occurring for several days, pulling in very moist gulf air. Additionally, Hurricane Patricia made landfall along the Pacific Mexican coast on the 23rd...and its remnant moisture quickly pushed across Mexico and into South Texas. The third ingredient was a cold front dropping down through the central U.S. The combination of all these elements were ideal for widespread heavy rain.

The event started in the early morning hours of October 24th as scattered showers and thunderstorms developed to the south and moved north through South Texas. As had been well forecast by model guidance, during the morning hours, the rain filled in and covered all of South Texas. The sheer amount of moisture in the atmosphere led to a large number of showers and thunderstorms capable of producing torrential rains. In fact, the moisture level, measured by instruments attached to weather balloons and reported as precipitable water (the amount of water vapor suspended in a column of air), topped out at 2.70 inches on this day, shattering an old record for the day, and narrowly missing a record for the entire month.

By mid-day, a boundary from the north was entering the area and producing strong wind gusts as it accelerated down the Rio Grande Plains. A few strong storms were reported across the area, but the main story was the rainfall. Overall, 3 to 7 inches of rain fell across the region. The ground was relatively dry due to the limited rain over the prior couple of months, which helped to alleviate some flash flooding issues. Some flash flooding did occur in Laredo due to the terrain and rainfall rates. Other flash flooding occurred further east in Duval, Jim Wells, Kleberg and Nueces counties.

As the system progressed, a low pressure center strengthened just off the Texas coast, producing very strong winds Saturday night. Gale force winds were experienced in marine areas with gusts to 40-50 miles per hour in coastal counties.

OBSERVATIONS ARE COLLECTED FROM A VARIETY OF SOURCES WITH VARYING
EQUIPMENT AND EXPOSURE. NOT ALL DATA LISTED ARE CONSIDERED OFFICIAL.

Before the heavy rainfall began, other effects of the large scale pattern were noticed across the Coastal Bend. Persistent moderate to strong onshore flow and long period swells increased tide levels above normal levels. This pushed water up over the shores and beaches in many areas. Water was up to the dunes at many Gulf-facing beaches, and some beach erosion occurred. Padre Island National Seashore was closed for several days due to impassable driving lanes.

Additional effects were felt along the area bays. Numerous roads were closed on North Beach in Corpus Christi, in Laguna Shores in Flour Bluff and also in portions of Rockport. Tide levels were as high as 2.88 ft above mean sea level (MSL) at Bob Hall Pier, and ranged from 2 to 2.5 feet above MSL at other tidal reporting stations. A coastal flood warning was issued for all of the coastal counties in South Texas on Oct 22 and continued through Oct 25th. This was the first time since September 2010 that a coastal flood warning had been issued for South Texas. Coastal flood warnings are issued when significant impacts of tidal overflow are occurring, such as closed roads.

This video was taken on North Beach in Corpus Christi where water was overflowing a small wall and onto many streets. There should be a parking area where the parking meters are located - instead, several inches of sand had washed over the wall.

The graphs below are recorded tide levels. As a general guide, at Gulf-facing locations, when the tide reaches 2 feet above MSL water is reaching the dunes. In the bays, somewhere between 1.5 and 2 feet, water starts to have impacts.
