South Texas Severe Weather Events - April 16th, 17th, and 22nd 2015

A very strong subtropical jet stream of 100+ knots along with several upper level disturbances, several frontal boundaries, and a very moist and extremely unstable airmass impacted South Texas and the adjacent coastal waters on April 16th, 17th, and the 22nd, 2015. The strong subtropical jet stream aided in producing strong wind shear across South Texas and the adjacent coastal waters. As a result of the strong wind shear and extreme instability, many thunderstorms quickly became severe during this 3-day period.

During the afternoon on the 16th, 2 brief EF-0 tornadoes occurred in Refugio County. The first tornado (radar image to the left) occurred at 251 PM CDT near Quintana. The second tornado occurred at 331 PM CDT around 2 miles south-southwest of Tivoli. Damage to several utility poles and large tree limbs occurred with these tornadoes. No injuries and fatalities occurred with these weak tornadoes. Besides the tornadoes, large hail was observed with this supercell thunderstorm as well as earlier storms across Goliad county. The specifics on each tornado can be found on the interactive map below.

During the afternoon and evening on the 17th, widespread severe weather occurred. Many reports of wind damage caused by strong winds up to 70 mph along with hail up to golfball size were observed across South Texas.

On the 22nd, several supercells developed and tracked east-southeast (visible satellite image to the right) across the region and well into the Gulf of Mexico along a nearly stationary front stretching from South Texas into the central Gulf of Mexico. These storms contained very large hail up to tennis ball size (near Austwell) and very strong winds greater than 60 mph. An 87 mph wind gust was measured at the NDBC's buoy 42019 in the evening on the 22nd as a supercell thunderstorm which had earlier affected South Texas moved near the buoy. Wind damage, flash flooding, funnel clouds, and even a waterspout occurred with these severe thunderstorms.
