South Texas Heavy Rain and Severe Weather Event - March 9th, 2016

Infrared Satellite Loop - 501 PM CST March 8 through 300 PM CST March 9, 2016

A very potent and slow moving upper level low along with plentiful moisture and a strong low level jet not only produced strong to severe thunderstorms, but also heavy rainfall and flooding over portions of South Texas during the late evening and early morning hours of March 8th and 9th, 2016. Isolated severe thunderstorms with heavy rainfall began over the Mexican Plateau and impacted Webb County and southern portions of Duval County late on March 8th. A customs border patrol agent estimated 60 mph winds in Webb County around 845 PM as the storms moved near the Laredo area. With the thunderstorm activity gradually weakening as it moved northeast overnight, no other severe weather was reported. Thus, the showers and storms provided much-needed rainfall to South Texas residents.

However, more storms developed over the Rio Grande Valley south of Kingsville before sunrise on March 9th, and became better organized and stronger as they moved north into the Coastal Bend. This development occurred, as the best part of the upper jet began to impact South Texas. As a result, strong to severe thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall developed and moved north through the eastern portions of South Texas.

Severe thunderstorms began to impact the coastal counties of South Texas around 800 AM, with the storms producing damaging straight-line winds. An uprooted tree was reported in the community of Gregory ,with damaging winds also reported in the cities of Victoria and Rockport. However, the community of Bonnie View in Refugio County suffered the most damage. A severe thunderstorm damaged a barn ,with a rancher estimating 60 to 70 mph winds from the storm.

With persistent southerly winds in the mid levels of the atmosphere, thunderstorms which developed moved over the same areas again and again. Thus, along with the severe weather, persistent very heavy rainfall produced flash flooding over portions of the region. Locations receiving the most rainfall were the southern coastal counties (especially Kleberg, Nueces, and San Patricio Counties), where six or more inches of rain fell in 2 to 3 hours! Also, most of the northern coastal counties and the Victoria Crossroads region saw between 2 and 4 inches of rain in just a few hours. However, only minor flooding was reported in these areas. The strongest storms with the heaviest rainfall finally moved out of the area by mid afternoon.

By early evening, the upper jet began to shift east into the Gulf of Mexico, with the strongest storms moving offshore. Although more showers and thunderstorms developed during the late evening and overnight hours over South Texas, with the atmosphere more stabilized from the day's convection and the best upper dynamics over the Gulf of Mexico, no other severe weather or flooding was observed.

By the morning of March 10th, nearly all of eastern half of South Texas (i.e. excluding Webb and La Salle Counties) saw at least 1 1/2 inches of rainfall over the 48 hour period. Most of Nueces, San Patricio, and Kleberg Counties saw 3 to 6 inches of rainfall, with isolated amounts of more than 8 inches!
