- 1870
President Ulysses S. Grant signed a joint resolution of Congress authorizing the Secretary of War to establish a National Weather Bureau. Later that year, the first systematized synchronous weather observations ever taken in the U.S. were made by "observer sergeants" of the Army Signal Service's War Department.
- 1891
The Weather Bureau was placed under the Department of Agriculture where the nation's meteorological services expanded into issuing outlooks to aid agricultural planning and fire weather and aviation forecasts.
- 1940
President Franklin D. Roosevelt transferred the Weather Bureau to the Department of Commerce (DOC) where it remains today.
- 1970
The name of the Weather Bureau was changed to the National Weather Service (NWS) and became a component of the DOC's newly created National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Historically, America's interests in maritime commerce, agriculture, and aviation led the NWS to major advances in the type and quality of services it now provide.
Over a 130 year legacy of service to America, the NWS has marshaled scientific and technological advances of the time to improve weather service
