EMWIN News

EMWIN On GOES R:

The EMWIN team working with representatives from NESDIS, NASA, and the GOES R project team used the recently launched GOES 14 satellite to help test the next generation EMWIN prototype receiver which is nearing completion.  The GOES 14 satellite (formerly known as GOES O) was launched on June 27, 2009 and became the second operational GOES N series satellite in orbit.  The tests were performed at Wallops Command and Data Acquisition (CDA) station from August 24-27, 2009 and had positive results for both the EMWIN and LRIT data streams.  Although final test results have not yet been released, the results indicate that the GOES R EMWIN/LRIT prototype receiver performed within the specified parameters. The prototype provides backward compatibility to the current GOES generation broadcast to ensure transition flexibility.  In the GOES R era, the EMWIN broadcast data rate will greatly increase, allowing for a much larger product set. Additional EMWIN team testing will continue until the GOES 14 satellite is placed into storage later this year.

EMWIN at the NOAA 6th GOES Users’ Conference:

The EMWIN team is planning to support the demonstration of the prototype receiver at the NOAA 6th GOES Users’ Conference.  The conference will be held from November 3-5, 2009 in Madison Wisconsin and will consists of consist of overviews of the current, near-term and future GOES systems.

Of particular interest to EMWIN Vendors/Users will be the EMWIN/LRIT GOES-R Prototype Software Defined Receiver Demonstration and EMWIN/LRIT Presentation.  This demo will highlight our ongoing efforts with NASA, NESDIS, Aerospace Corp and the GOES R Program office to develop the plans for the EMWIN broadcast on GOES R.  The prototype being developed utilizes an open source, software-defined radio receiver that will receive EMWIN from GOES-R and be backward compatible for EMWIN-N and the current EMWIN broadcast.

EMWIN-N Transition Nears:

The two GOES-N series satellites, GOES 13 and 14 are awaiting full time operations.  Once they are placed into service the EMWIN-N broadcast will replace the current legacy broadcast.  For transition details click here.  All users should consider migrating to EMWIN-N capable systems. Please see our vendor page for EMWIN vendor listings.
