A line of showers and thunderstorms, associated with a potent weather system, is expected to impact portions of northwest Georgia overnight and will continue to move through the remainder of the outlook area through early Monday evening. Isolated to scattered strong and severe thunderstorms are possible across portions of north and central Georgia. Any severe thunderstorm that develops will have the potential to produce damaging wind gusts to 60 MPH and large hail. An isolated tornado is also possible.
The KFFC WSR-88D Doppler radar operated by the NOAA National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia, will be down for approximately two weeks for the repair of a major mechanical component. An engineering team from the Radar Operations Center (ROC) in Norman, Oklahoma, determined today that the bull gear, the primary gear for turning the radar antenna, has failed. This repair will require 12,000 to 15,000 pounds of equipment and a six-person team from the ROC to restore the radar. At this time, the team anticipates beginning the repair on Sunday, April 30, with the radar returning to service by Sunday, May 14.
