A Wind Advisory has been issued for portions of far North Georgia tonight and early Monday. Elevations of 2000 feet and above could see southwest winds of 15 MPH to 25 MPH with frequent gusts up to 40 MPH ahead of a potent storm system.
A line of showers and thunderstorms is expected to move into northwest Georgia later this afternoon and continue moving eastward this evening. Isolated to scattered strong and severe thunderstorms are possible across portions of north and central Georgia. Any severe thunderstorm that develops will have the potential to produce damaging wind gusts up to 60 MPH, frequent lightning, and some hail. An isolated tornado is also possible. The storms are expected to lose their intensity as they move eastward later this evening. Another round of storms is expected to arrive early in the morning Monday, before sunrise and move eastward through the state into the late afternoon.
The KFFC WSR-88D Doppler radar operated by the NOAA National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia, will be down for approximately two weeks for the repair of a major mechanical component. An engineering team from the Radar Operations Center (ROC) in Norman, Oklahoma, determined today that the bull gear, the primary gear for turning the radar antenna, has failed. This repair will require 12,000 to 15,000 pounds of equipment and a six-person team from the ROC to restore the radar. At this time, the team anticipates beginning the repair on Sunday, April 30, with the radar returning to service by Sunday, May 14.
