Icy road conditions have been reported in parts of North Texas from Dallas to Canton and points southeastward. These conditions will expand to include most of Central Texas as a transition to wintry weather is expected over the next few hours.
...Wintry precipitation is likely across most of North and Central Texas tonight and Tuesday morning... A WINTER STORM WARNING is in effect from midnight tonight through 6 PM Tuesday for areas along and south of a line from Goldthwaite to Hillsboro to Sulphur Springs where a wintry mix of precipitation will result in a glaze of ice and 1/2 inch up to 2 inches of sleet and snow. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is in effect elsewhere along and southeast of a Breckenridge to Grapevine to Bonham line from 6 PM through Noon Tuesday where total ice, sleet, and snow accumulations of up to one half inch are expected. A strong arctic cold front is moving through North and Central Texas at this time. Light rain will develop and change to a wintry mix as temperatures fall below freezing before becoming all snow. Due to the very cold temperatures, just light accumulations of this wintry precipitation will cause hazardous travel conditions. The highest amounts of snow are expected to occur in a band from Waco to Corsicana to Canton where amounts may reach 1 to 2 inches. Elsewhere generally less than a half inch of accumulation is expected.
In wake of an arctic cold front sweep through the region tonight, the gusty north winds 15 to 25 mph will result in bitter cold wind chills in the single digits north, to the lower and middle teens across Central Texas by the morning rush hour Tuesday morning. Remember to wear layers of clothing underneath heavy coats or jackets to better insulate yourself from the bitter cold wind chill values expected Tuesday morning.
Light snow will end across Central Texas by mid afternoon on Tuesday. Highs will remain at or below freezing across the region, so road conditions will likely not significantly improve even after the precipitation ends. Winds will decrease to 10 to 15 mph during the afternoon hours.
Here are some winter driving safety tips! Be sure to allow for plenty of time to reach your destination.
A bitterly cold arctic airmass will settle across the region, leading to extreme cold conditions Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. Low temperatures will range from single digits across the northern and northwestern-most locales to the teens everywhere else. A Hard Freeze Watch (which is for temperatures at or below 10 degrees Fahrenheit) has been issued for areas across North Texas. Please remember to protect the things that are most vulnerable during extremely cold weather: people, pets, pipes and plants.
It's a good time to remember "The 4 P's". Remember to turn off your sprinklers at night when temperatures are forecast to fall below freezing. Creating ice on sidewalks and roads can cause accidents, both on foot and in vehicles.
