This data set contains water bodies (lakes , reservoirs and bays used by the National Weather Service (NWS).

Purpose:

To have available to NWS forecasters a data set containing water bodies that will be useful to in the creation of weather forcasts for the lakes and water bodies.

Process_Description:

From the Waterbodies dataset Features whose type values were equal to "Null" or "void Area" were deleted from the dataset. Features with the label "Bays or Estuaries". "Glacier", "dry Lake", "Streams", or "Marshes and Swamps" were converted to shape files respectively (for possible future use) and deleted from the data set. For specific coastal areas of Alaska, polygons from the Marine zones data set were added to the data file. Arcs for the Great Lakes from The Medium Resolution Digital Vector Shoreline were input into ArcInfo (ArcEdit), "dangling" arcs resolved and the coverages converted to polygons. Using the AWIPS states shape file as a "template", the U.S. shoreline of the Great Lakes polygons were adjusted to match the states shoreline. The polygon was "split" to create each of the individual Great Lakes and major rivers. The Great Lakes data set was then added to the lakes data set. Finally the Great Salt Lake was deleted from the data set and the polygon for the lake provided by the River Forecast Center at Salt Lake City was added to the data set. .
