THE GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE RECORDED 
THE LONGEST CONSECUTIVE NUMBER OF DAYS WITH NO MEASURABLE RAIN AT 
THE OFFICE...36 DRY DAYS. A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE HAS 
EXISTED IN THE GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG METRO AREA SINCE 1918. THE 
PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 30 DAYS WITH NO MEASURABLE RAIN IN 1952 FROM 
OCTOBER 11 TO NOVEMBER 9. THE LAST DAY THAT IT RAINED AT THE WEATHER 
OFFICE WAS SEPTEMBER 25 WHEN 0.39 INCHES FELL.    
 
THE DRIEST OCTOBER WAS RECORDED BY A COOPERATIVE OBSERVER IN 
GREENVILLE BEFORE THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE WAS BUILT IN 
THE AREA. THAT RECORD WAS OCTOBER 1904 WHEN ONLY A TRACE OF RAIN WAS 
REPORTED FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH.  
 
THE DRIEST OCTOBER WAS ALSO RECORDED AT CHARLOTTE AND ASHEVILLE 
NORTH CAROLINA. RECORDS HAVE BEEN KEPT BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER 
SERVICE IN CHARLOTTE SINCE 1878.  THE DRIEST OCTOBER SINCE THAT TIME 
WAS IN 1953 WHEN ONLY A TRACE OF RAIN FELL.  THIS OCTOBER TIED THAT 
RECORD SINCE ONLY A TRACE FELL ON THE 17TH AND 18TH.  THE LONGEST 
PERIOD WITHOUT MEASUREABLE RAIN IN CHARLOTTE WAS A 40 DAY STRETCH IN 
1886...FROM SEPTEMBER 16 TO OCTOBER 26. THE LAST MEASURABLE RAIN IN 
CHARLOTTE WAS SEPTEMBER 25. 
 
THE ASHEVILLE AIRPORT WEATHER STATION HAS ALSO HAD NO RAINFALL SINCE 
SEPTEMBER 25.  THE DRIEST OCTOBER ON RECORD FOR THE AIRPORT SINCE 
THE OFFICE OPENED IN 1964 WAS 0.19 IN 1991.  PRIOR TO SEPTEMBER 
1964...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE WAS LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN 
ASHEVILLE..OPENING IN 1902.
