Several clusters of thunderstorms are expected to push southeastward across the region today and tonight, and conditions will be favorable for severe weather throughout the period. Damaging winds in the 60-70 mpg range, hail up to the size of quarters, frequent lightning and locally heavy rainfall will occur with the strongest thunderstorms. In addition to this, a few brief tornadoes will also be possible with storms that impact the region overnight.
Thunderstorms will likely be ongoing across portions of the region around sunrise on Sunday. This activity is expected to dissipate, leaving a lower coverage of storms during the afternoon. However, conditions will remain favorable for severe thunderstorms should any redevelopment occur. A slow-moving cold front will bring another more widespread round of showers and storms on Sunday night. Although a few strong to marginally severe thunderstorms will be possible, the main threat will shift to locally heavy rainfall. This activity will likely continue into Monday morning as well.
This graphic contains daily climate data (climate normals and records) for today for the sites listed. The legend is in the lower left portion of the image. The current "normals" period is 1981-2010. The date for each location represents the year in which the first observations began. However, some weather elements were recorded and/or retained before others at some sites. For example, at Huntsville, precipitation records begin in 1894, but official temperature records start in 1907. Following is a list containing the starting year that continuous weather records began at each site. Location: Year Temperature Records Began/Year Precipitation Records Began... Huntsville:1907/1894... Muscle Shoals:1893/1893... Cullman:1907/1907... Fayetteville:1957/1935... Guntersville:1910/1904... Russellville:1953/1953... Scottsboro:1891/1891...
