Australian Collaboration Will Bolster Tsunami Warnings
NOAA formalized an agreement with Australia's Bureau of Meteorology to collaboratively strengthen meteorological and hydrological forecasting. Signed by retired Air Force Brig. Gen. David L. Johnson, Director of NOAA's National Weather Service, and Dr. Geoffrey Love, Director of Australia's Bureau of Meteorology, the agreement was signed during World Meteorological Day in Melbourne. Each country will create a framework in which a network of scientists will share data and technical capabilities, an important building block for GEOSS. As part of the agreement, technology exchange will bolster both countries' support for international tsunami warning systems and accelerate Australia's capacity to operationally support deep ocean tsunami detection platforms. Additionally, the agreement will allow NOAA's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii to benefit from data provided by the Australian Tsunami Warning System's expanded network of sea level and seismic instruments.
