Details:

  1. 3/15/1959:  This tornado was on the ground for 2 miles, affecting the Dexter area.  It moved northeast, causing heavy damage to a farmstead.   
  2. 4/17/1960:  This tornado tracked for about 20 miles across southern Effingham County, from north of Edgewood to near Dietrich.  Twenty farms were affected, with one farm destroyed.
  3. 6/22/1960:  This tornado hit Shumway, damaging several homes, a church, and the high school cafeteria.  Several barns nearby were destroyed. 
  4. 3/6/1961:  Touched down near the southeast edge of Effingham and moved southeast for 25 miles, lifting in Newton (Jasper County).  In Effingham County, a concrete block gas station was destroyed, and a farm house was torn apart. 
  5. 9/24/1961:  Was on the ground for 1/2 mile in the Effingham area. 
  6. 5/15/1967:  On the ground for a half mile, but was about tree-top level as a funnel cloud before that.  It damaged the roof of an industrial building. 
  7. 7/1/1973:  Touched down on a farm near Mason, tearing the roof off a machine shed.
  8. 8/10/1974:  Brief touchdown southeast of Effingham, only causing minor damage. 
  9. 5/1/1983:  Touched down near the Effingham/Clay county line near Edgewood. Two people were killed when a mobile home was destroyed. 
  10. 4/12/1984:  Touched down near Dieterich before moving into Jasper County.  Caused damage to a farm in Effingham County. 
  11. 4/27/1984:  Brief touchdown in Effingham, causing no damage. 
  12. 5/25/1989:  Brief touchdown near Altamont. 
  13. 5/16/1990   This tornado took an intermittent 15 mile path across Effingham County.  It touched down near Altamont and moved northeast to around Funkhouse, and Lake Sara, before curving east to affect parts of Effingham.
  14. 7/2/1993:  Brief touchdown in an open field near Watson, causing no damage.
  15. 4/26/1994:  This tornado was on the ground for 6 miles, touching down 2 miles southwest of Eberle and moving east-northeast.  The worst damage occurred just west of Eberle, where 3 people were injured when a house was severely damaged. 
  16. 5/2/1998:  Touched down 5 miles west of Effingham, only blowing down two trees. 
  17. 6/1/1999:  Brief touchdown at the intersection of U.S. Highway 40 and state route 128, knocking over a few trees and power lines. 
  18. 4/16/2006:  This tornado touched down 5 miles southwest of Dieterich, and traveled northeast for 4 miles. At one farmstead, it destroyed a barn, 4 outbuildings and several grain bins, and at another homestead, 3 outbuildings and a garage was destroyed. One well-built home further along the path had an attached garage destroyed, front porch roof torn off, and two second story dormers turn off. 
  19. 11/17/2013:  This was part of a large tornado outbreak in Illinois.  This particular tornado originally touched down in Fayette County, and crossed the Effingham County line about 3 miles northwest of Altamont.  Click here for more details.
  20. 2/20/2014:  Touched down 4 miles west-southwest of Shumway, and moved northeast. Several power poles were snapped along state highway 33 before the tornado dissipated.
  21. 4/27/2016:  Brief touchdown in an open field 3.2 miles south-southwest of Altamont, causing no damage. 
  22. 4/3/2018:  This tornado moved in from Fayette County about 8 miles west-northwest of Edgewood. Click here for more details. 
  23. 5/6/2021:  Brief touchdown in a field about 2 miles south of Altamont.
  24. 5/6/2021:  Touched down near mile marker 145 on I-57, causing no damage.
