THIS REPORT COVERS THE PERIOD SEPT 23-25 2005 WHEN HURRICANE RITA
MOVED THROUGH THE GULF OF MEXICO BEFORE MAKING LANDFALL IN EXTREME
SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA AND SOUTHEAST TEXAS OF SEPT 24. THIS DATA IS
PRELIMINARY AND WILL BE UPDATED AS NEW INFORMATION BECOMES
AVAILABLE.

H. STORM EFFECT
PRIMARY AFFECT WAS STORM SURGE FLOODING IN LOW LYING COASTAL AREAS.
NUMEROUS HOUSES AND BUSINESSES WERE FLOODED IN LOW LYING COMMUNITIES
ALONG BAYOUS IN SOUTHERN TERREBONNE, SOUTH LAFOURCHE, AND SOUTHERN
JEFFERSON PARISHES. SOME LOCAL DRAINAGE LEVEES IN SOUTHERN TERREBONNE
AND SOUTHERN JEFFERSON PARISHES WERE PARISH WERE OVERTOPPED OR BREACHED
BY THE STORM SURGE. STORM SURGE FLOODING ALSO OCCURRED IN AREAS ADJACENT
TO LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN OF SOUTHERN ST TAMMANY PARISH WITH SOMES HOMES AND
BUSINESS FLOODED IN SLIDELL AND MANDEVILLE. FLOODING WAS ALSO REPORTED
AROUND LAKE MAUREPAS WITH A NUMBER OF STRUCTURE FLOODED. REPAIRED LEVEES
WERE OVERTOPPED OR BREACHED ALONG INDUSTRIAL CANAL IN NEW ORLEANS WITH
RENEWED FLOODING IN ADJACENT PORTIONS OF ST. BERNARD PARISH AND NEW
ORLEANS...ALTHOUGH FLOODING WAS MUCH MORE LIMITED THAN DURING HURRICANE
