...A Look Back at the Climate for Meteorological Fall (September,
October, November) 2016 for Chicago and Rockford...

At Chicago, the average high temperature for the fall season was
66.3 degrees, which is 4.5 degrees above the 1981 to 2010
average. The average low temperature was 49.2 degrees, which is
6.0 degrees above normal. The mean temperature for the season was
57.8 degrees, which is 5.3 degrees above normal.

A total of 7.22 inches of precipitation was recorded during this
past fall, which is 2.29 inches below normal. There was a trace of
snow recorded at Chicago, which is 1.4 inches below normal.

is 5.2 degrees above normal. The average low temperature was 47.4
degrees, which is 6.3 degrees above normal. The mean temperature
for the season was 57.3 degrees, which is 5.8 degrees above
normal.

A total of 7.36 inches of precipitation was recorded during this
past fall, which was 1.24 inches below normal. In addition, a
trace of snow was recorded, which is 1.8 inches below normal.

Chicago and Rockford...

At Chicago, the average high temperature was 55.3 degrees, which
is 7.1 degrees above normal. The average low temperature was 38.3
degrees, which is 5.9 degrees above normal. The average
temperature for the month was 46.8 degrees which is 6.5 degrees
above normal. During the month of November, 1.69 inches of
precipitation were recorded, which is 1.64 inches below normal.
A trace of snow was recorded, which is 1.2 inches below normal.

One record was set for Chicago for the month of November 2016:
* Record daily warmest minimum temperature of 61 degrees on the 1st.

At Rockford, the average high temperature was 55.4 degrees, which
is 7.8 degrees above normal. The average low temperature was 36.3
degrees, which is 6.0 degrees above normal. The average
temperature for the month was 45.9 degrees, which is 7.0 degrees
above normal. During the month of November, 2.67 inches of
precipitation were recorded, which is 0.09 inches above normal.
A trace of snow was recorded, which is 1.7 inches below normal.

There were 3 records for Rockford for the month of November 2016:
* Record daily highest minimum temperature of 60 degrees on the 1st.

...Rockford Sets Record for Latest First Autumn Freeze...

Just prior to midnight on Friday evening November 11, the
official temperature at Rockford had dropped to 32 degrees. This
was the first freezing temperature of the autumn season and is the
latest first freeze on record (dating back to 1905). It breaks the
old record of November 4, 1973 by an entire week. The normal first
freeze for Rockford is October 8.

The length of time between the last spring freeze and the first
autumn freeze, sometimes referred to as the growing season, was
technically not a record in 2016 for Rockford. This was because
the last spring freeze on May 15 was late compared to the normal
of April 28. However, the low on May 15 was only 31 degrees and
it was the only subfreezing low after April 12 and likely did not
have an impact on most agriculture. Had April 12 been the final
freeze, the 213 days between last and first freeze would have been
a record topping the 203 days in 1973. This year`s growing season
length for Rockford will officially go down as 179 days. The
normal is 162 days.
