During the outage, radar coverage will be available from nearby sites including, Amarillo (KAMA), Cannon Air Force Base (KFDX), Midland (KMAF), Dyess Air Force Base (KDYX) and Frederick, OK (KFDR). This upgrade will include; a new signal processor, improvements to processing speeds and data quality, additional supports for IT security and replacement of obsolete technology. This is the first of four major upgrades, known as service life extension projects, planned in the next five years to replace and refurbish major components of the 20 year old WSR-88Ds and to keep radars operational into the 2030s.
