...A REVIEW OF 2014 WEATHER AND CLIMATE FOR THE STATE OF ARKANSAS...

SUMMARY
=====================================================================
BY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE...2014 IN ARKANSAS MARKED THE COLDEST YEAR IN
35 YEARS. PRELIMINARILY...IT IS TIED WITH 1940 FOR THE 4TH COLDEST
YEAR EVER RECORDED SINCE STATEWIDE RECORDS HAVE BEEN TABULATED
/1895/. ONLY 1979...1917...AND 1912 AND 1903 WERE COLDER...BUT BY
LESS THAN ONE DEGREE.

THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE DURING THE YEAR WAS 102 DEGREES AT
BATESVILLE AIRPORT...GILBERT...AND SALEM. THIS WAS THE COOLEST STATE
MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE SINCE 1989. THERE WERE SEVERAL PERIODS WITH NEAR-
RECORD COLD HIGH TEMPERATURES DURING THE YEAR...PARTICULARLY IN
EARLY JANUARY...EARLY MARCH...MID AND LATE JULY...AND MID NOVEMBER.

MINIMUM TEMPERATURES WERE SOME OF THE COLDEST SEEN IN MANY YEARS.
THIS WAS PARTICULARLY THE CASE IN EARLY JANUARY...EARLY MARCH...MID
MAY...MID JULY...AND MID NOVEMBER. FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE
2011...THE STATES COLDEST TEMPERATURE WAS BELOW ZERO...-7 AT
GRAVETTE ON JANUARY 6TH TO BE EXACT. LOW TEMPERATURES IN EARLY
MARCH WERE SOME OF THE COLDEST EVER RECORDED. IN MANY AREAS...LOWS
WERE THE COLDEST SINCE THE 1940S OR 1960S. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE
IN THE STATE IN MARCH WAS 0...WHICH WAS THE COLDEST READING SEEN IN
ARKANSAS SINCE 2002. EARLY MAY STARTED OFF RATHER WARM...BUT BY MID
MONTH...READINGS HAD COOLED QUITE DRASTICALLY. ON THE 17TH...MAMMOTH
SPRING RECORDED A LOW TEMPERATURE OF 31 DEGREES...WHICH WAS THE
LATEST FREEZE IN ARKANSAS SINCE 1912...AND THE 3RD LATEST EVER
RECORDED IN THE STATE. NOVEMBER SAW THE FIRST SINGLE-DIGIT READING
IN ARKANSAS DURING THE MONTH SINCE 1997.

RAINFALL WAS MOST FREQUENT DURING THE SPRING AND EARLY SUMMER
MONTHS...AND AGAIN IN OCTOBER AND DECEMBER. JANUARY WAS THE DRIEST
MONTH...AND JUNE WAS THE WETTEST. DURING THE LAST HALF OF THE YEAR...
ABNORMALLY DRY CONDITIONS DEVELOPED IN PORTIONS OF NORTHERN AND
WESTERN ARKANSAS...WITH MODERATE DROUGHT CONDITIONS NOTED IN THE
NORTHEAST BY EARLY DECEMBER. IT WAS THE DRIEST YEAR SINCE 2012...BUT
NOT IN THE TOP 50 DRIEST.

SNOWFALL WAS SEEN IN JANUARY...FEBRUARY...MARCH...NOVEMBER AND
DECEMBER. MEASURABLE SNOW FELL IN JANUARY...FEBRUARY...MARCH AND
NOVEMBER. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT SNOW AND SLEET WAS SEEN IN NORTH
CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS IN EARLY MARCH. SOUTHERN ARKANSAS SAW
THE MOST SIGNIFICANT SLEET AND SNOW IN FEBRUARY.

THERE WAS A MINOR ICE STORM IN EARLY JANUARY IN NORTHERN AND CENTRAL
ARKANSAS...AND A MORE SIGNIFICANT ONE IN EARLY FEBRUARY IN THE
CENTRAL THIRD OF THE STATE. THIS ONE SAW UP TO ONE QUARTER OF AN
INCH OF ICE ACCUMULATION IN EASTERN ARKANSAS...AND IN THE HIGHER
TERRAIN OF THE OUACHITA MOUNTAINS IN WESTERN ARKANSAS.

PROBABLY THE MOST SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM OF THE YEAR WAS IN EARLY
MARCH ON THE 2ND AND 3RD. A STRONG ARCTIC FRONT SLOWLY MOVED THROUGH
THE STATE...PRODUCING HEAVY RAINFALL. THE RAIN QUICKLY CHANGED TO
SNOW IN NORTHERN ARKANSAS...WHERE TWO TO FIVE INCHES FELL. RAIN WAS
SLOWER TO TRANSITION IN THE CENTRAL AND SOUTH...AND THERE WAS A
PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN. THE HEAVIEST ICE ACCUMULATION WAS AROUND
EASTERN ARKANSAS...WHERE SOME AREAS SAW HALF AN INCH OR MORE OF
ACCRUAL. WHEN PRECIPITATION DID START TO CHANGE OVER...IT WAS
PREDOMINANTLY SLEET...AND SEVERAL INCHES OF IT FELL. BITTER COLD
FOLLOWED THE WINTER STORM...WITH MUCH OF THE EASTERN TWO-THIRDS OF
THE STATE STAYING BELOW FREEZING FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. THE
COMBINATION OF THE FREEZING RAIN...SLEET...AND GUSTY WINDS BEHIND
THE SYSTEM CAUSED WIDESPREAD POWER OUTAGES...PARTICULARLY IN EASTERN
ARKANSAS. MAJOR TRAVEL PROBLEMS WERE NOTED ALONG THE I-40 AND I-55
CORRIDORS IN EASTERN ARKANSAS...ESPECIALLY CLOSE TO THE MEMPHIS
METROPOLITAN AREA...WITH PEOPLE STRANDED FOR SEVERAL DAYS.

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT WEATHER STORY OF 2014...HOWEVER...WAS THE EF-4
TORNADO WHICH STRUCK PORTIONS OF PULASKI...FAULKNER...AND WHITE
COUNTIES ON APRIL 27TH. THE TORNADO TORE A 41-MILE PATH ACROSS THE
THREE COUNTIES...STRIKING MAYFLOWER AND VILONIA AND FOR THE SECOND
TIME IN THREE YEARS. 16 PEOPLE WERE KILLED...MAKING IT THE DEADLIEST
SINGLE TORNADO IN ARKANSAS SINCE THE FIRST JONESBORO TORNADO ON MAY
15TH 1968...WHEN 35 FATALITIES OCCURRED. 193 PEOPLE WERE INJURED. IT
WAS ALSO THE FIRST EF-4 TORNADO IN ARKANSAS SINCE MAY 25TH 2011...
WHEN THE DENNING TORNADO CUT A 46-MILE PATH THROUGH FRANKLIN...
LOGAN...AND JOHNSON COUNTIES.

BELOW ARE STATEWIDE EXTREMES...AS WELL AS AVERAGE TEMPERATURES AND
RAINFALL FOR EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR. REMEMBER...MOST OF THE DATA
BELOW IS PRELIMINARY UNTIL CERTIFIED CORRECT BY THE NATIONAL
CLIMATIC DATA CENTER IN ASHEVILLE NORTH CAROLINA. DATA FROM JANUARY
THROUGH SEPTEMBER HAVE ALREADY UNDERGONE FINAL QUALITY CONTROL...AND HAVE
BEEN PUBLISHED.
