Subject: degrib version 0.98
Date: Thu, 06 Feb 2003 17:50:53 -0500 From: "Arthur.Taylor" Organization: DOC/NOAA/NWS - National Weather Service To: Arthur Taylor Hi You all have the unique distinction of being registered on my degrib mailing list (all 19 of us) (I'd like to welcome Mike Schenk, and Jeff to the list). Since you are a member, (and I can't tell the difference between bug fixes and releases) you all get this email... Please let me know if you want to unregister. ----------- I have just finished putting together version "0.98" (last one was "0.92" on 1/28/2003) New to this release: 1) Combined the original "tcldegrib" interface with a GUI that I wrote which on the touch of a button will go and download the latest forecasts from the NDFD ftp site. The program has now been renamed to "tkdegrib" since "tcldegrib" was a bit of a misnomer since the program required Tk as well as Tcl. (A true tcldegrib would have only needed Tcl). 2) Completely rewrote the Tcl/Tk interface to the GRIB2 decoder!!! You will only recognize pieces of it. For those Tcl/Tk programmers out there, the "explorer" like interface that I have now is (in my humble opinion) REALLY COOL!!! It allows one to double click on a GRIB2 file and get an inventory, as well as allowing one to double click on a ".txt" file to browse it. 3) Interfaced the new "combined" Tcl/Tk program with the NDFD imgGen program which has been ported to MS-Windows. This will allow MS-Windows users the ability to view the data as static .png's. (good for those who don't have ESRI GIS products) 4) Generated a new install program, which creates the SHORT CUTS for you. MS-Windows Users take note!!! (get the ndfd-demo.exe) 5) Got rid of parts of the web site which were out of date (for those who have forgotten, it is: www.nws.noaa.gov/mdl/NDFD_GRIB2Decoder/) 6) Bug fix: The .flt file was being generated as if the grid point was in the lower left corner of the grid cell. NDFD people had thought it should be the center point, and ESRI ArcView also agrees with them. The .hdr file is now generated with that correction. 7) Added some more options to the Tcl/Tk interface, and fixed some less important bugs... In particular, my interpretation of scale factor and scale value disagreed with the WMO experts. This only affects PoP12 meta data, and I have switched to their interpretation. ----------- As always, I tested this release on my PC (win 2000), a Linux machine, a HP-Unix machine, and an AIX-Unix (machine). Although I may have missed something in my testing, it should at least compile, and run for some of the test cases. For those of you with access to the NWS suitland machine, my current version is in: /nfsuser/g06/we25at/degrib. For those with access to MDL's GDP or NHDW machines, see: ~taylor/degrib/ Please let me know if you have problems. ----------- ALL: Please download the newer versions. Item 6) is an important fix! And the GUI is in my opinion MUCH improved. Regards, Arthur (PS: I think the "ndfd-demo.exe" is the one that we are going to be giving out on CDs at the AMS).
