Subject: Degrib version 1.1
Date: Fri, 02 May 2003 18:06:15 -0500 From: "Arthur.Taylor" Organization: DOC/NOAA/NWS - National Weather Service To: Arthur Taylor Hi You all have the unique distinction of being registered on my degrib (aka NDFD_GRIB2Decoder) mailing list (all 52 of us) (I'd like to welcome: jhayes1, james.hayes, CardinalSyntax, rkambic, vanamburgh, n_fujikawa, emret, oad, mike.gillen, sean.bowser, dave, pdavenport6, jacquesr, rcmandrade, kevin.schrab, Tim_Mathewson, PhilWelliver, and elliot53147) Please let me know (email me) if you want to unregister. ----------- I just wanted to let you all know that I have just finished putting together version "1.1" (last one that I announced was "1.0" on 2/21/2003) (So at least I'm not constantly bugging you :-) ) The newest version of the program is on: www.nws.noaa.gov/mdl/NDFD_GRIB2Decoder/ New to release 1.1: 1) Enabled the GRIB2 Decoder to write out polygon .shp files instead of just point .shp files. The files are larger than the point .shp files, but it is believed that ESRI can handle the polygon files more readily. Essentially ESRI should be able to join the small polygon's together to get big polygons (I hear it is a "dissolving operation", but have not done it myself). I plan to write similar code into the decoder myself shortly, to save people the effort. 2) Started to allow GRIB Version 1 data. It can handle a LIMITED variety of GRIB 1 files. Currently it can inventory a number of them, but it can only read GRIB 1 messages that are simply packed. Further restricting it is the fact that it can only write Lambert Conformal Map projections to ESRI formats. I should be able to increase this to Polar Stereographic, Mercator, and Lat/Lon grids shortly. 3) Enabled the GRIB2 Decoder to handle multiple grids in the same GRIB2 message. Although NDFD is not using this feature, the GRIB2 specifications allow for it. 4) Started to allow other types (than NDFD) of GRIB2 Messages. In particular we (at MDL) are working with some satellite analysis, which the decoder can handle, but we are uncertain as to the correct templates to use. 5) With the GRIB 1 capability, I restructured the metafile output (.txt) from the decoder, to make more sense from both a GRIB 1 and GRIB 2 perspective. At the same time, I also restructured some of the internal data structures. 6) Minor changes: Replaced instances of "Region" with "Sector" to avoid confusion. ----------- As always, I tested this release on my PC (win 2000), a Linux machine, a HP-Unix machine, and an AIX-Unix (machine). Although I may have missed something in my testing, it should at least compile, and run for some of the test cases. For those of you with access to the NWS suitland machine, my current version is in: /nfsuser/g06/we25at/degrib. For those with access to MDL's GDP or NHDW machines, see: ~taylor/degrib/ Please let me know if you have problems. ----------- Regards, Arthur
