May 29-30, 2017 Severe Weather and Macroburst

Two rounds of severe weather impacted the Newport/Morehead City County Warning Area (CWA) on the late evening of May 29 and morning hours of May 30, 2017. The initial line of severe thunderstorms produced a strong macroburst and scattered damage across northern Duplin County just before midnight producing numerous trees down and structural damage near Faison in northern Duplin County. Additional damage was reported near Beautancus.  

A second line of strong to severe thunderstorms moved along the coast, impacting primarily Onslow and Carteret counties between 8 and 10 AM on May 30, 2017. Minor wind damage was observed along with gusts as high as 82 mph from Fort Macon. Minor street flooding was also reported.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN NEWPORT/MOREHEAD CITY NC HAS CONFIRMED  
A MACROBURST /STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE/ NEAR FAISON IN DUPLIN COUNTY  
NORTH CAROLINA ON MAY 29 2017.  
  
A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM PRODUCED A MACROBURST NEAR FAISON, CAUSING  
WIDESPREAD TREE DAMAGE AND SOME SCATTERED STRUCTURE DAMAGE STRETCHING  
FROM AROUND 2 MILES SE OF FAISON TO NEARLY 6 MILES SOUTHEAST OF FAISON.  
LIGHT STRUCTURE DAMAGE AND UPROOTED TREES WERE OBSERVED ON MCNEIL ROAD.  
FURTHER SOUTHEAST, MULTIPLE OUTBUILDINGS WERE SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGED ON   
TAYLOR TOWN ROAD. A FEW HOG HOUSES ALSO SUSTAINED ROOF DAMAGE FARTHER   
DOWN THE ROAD. ON FRIENDSHIP CHURCH ROAD, SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE WAS   
OBSERVED AT A RESIDENCE WHERE A PINE TREE FELL ON A HOUSE. MULTIPLE   
TREES WERE ALSO SNAPPED OR UPROOTED FARTHER TO THE SOUTHEAST ON   
FRIENDSHIP CHURCH ROAD. THE DAMAGING WINDS WERE ESTIMATED TO BE 90 TO   
100 MPH, WITH A PATH WIDTH OF AROUND 1 MILE AND A PATH LENGTH OF ABOUT 4  
MILES.

A MACROBURST IS A CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFT WITH AN AFFECT OUTFLOW  
AREA OF AT LEAST 2 1/2 MILES WIDE AND PEAK WINDS LASTING BETWEEN  
5 AND 20 MINUTES. INTENSE MACROBURSTS MAY CAUSE TORNADO-FORCE  
DAMAGE OF UP TO EF3 INTENSITY. STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS ARE GENERALLY ANY  
WIND THAT IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ROTATION...USED MAINLY TO  
DIFFERENTIATE THEM FROM TORNADIC WINDS.
