Overview

A low pressure system and its complicated frontal structure moved through southern Wisconsin on Monday, April 25th, 2016.  A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued at 2:17 PM.  A surge of warm and somewhat humid air combined with energy in the middle levels of the atmosphere, interacting with the low's frontal structure, to produce a round of strong to severe thunderstorms over southeast Wisconsin.  Large hail was the primary threat for this event.  There were no reports of strong and damaging wind.

Below is the weather map and satellite image from around 4-5 PM on Monday, April 25th, 2016.  The radar loop runs from 3 - 5:30 PM:

mPing was incredibly useful for us on this day.  mPing is a smartphone app for Android and iOS that allows you to send in a current weather report for your location.  The app does use location services to plot your location and observation.  Your observation is fed directly into our computer and displayed so that we can see it in real-time, associated with the storms we are currently analyzing.  We promoted it during this past season's storm spotter training and it has been a big success.  But, we could use more participants.  Download mPing on your phone and start reporting!  Thank you!!!

The image on the left shows the mPing app interface.  The image on the right, shows how your report displays on our radar monitor.  We hover over the mPing symbol ( in this case the white circle with a <1) and it tells us the details of your report.

Hail:

The majority of hail reports were in the category of pea size, or 1/4 inch.  However, some of the stronger storms did produce hail up to around 1 inch.  One severe thunderstorm warning was issued.  That warning was for Ozaukee and parts of Washington county at 5:10 PM.  These storms were fast developing and diminished just about as quickly.  The largest storms were out over Lake Michigan.
