A line of showers and thunderstorms will affect areas west of I-65 this afternoon as it spreads slowly eastward across the region, with areas east of I-65 primarily being affected this evening. Some storms could become severe with damaging winds, quarter sized hail and a few tornadoes. A slight risk is posted for areas west of Greenville- Brewton-Mobile Bay line with a marginal risk to the east of this line. Note: Could be multiple rounds of storms impacting the local area. Be weather aware today and tonight and be prepared to move to a place of shelter quickly in the case warnings are issued for your area.
Heavy rainfall is possible this afternoon through late tonight. Rainfall amounts of 2-4 inches with localized higher amounts will be possible, especially across locations along and west of I- 65. Minor flooding of low lying areas and perhaps isolated instances of flash flooding will be possible west of I-65 today and tonight. A more limited potential of minor flooding of urban and low lying areas will exist across the rest of south central Alabama and northwest Florida.
A High Risk of dangerous rip currents continues across the Alabama and northwest Florida beaches today and tonight. This means that the surf is dangerous to ALL levels of swimmers. Please follow the advice of beach patrol and beach flag systems.
In addition to a HIGH Risk of rip currents, there is also a High Surf Advisory and Coastal Flood Advisory in effect through late tonight. High surf of 5 to 8 feet is expected through tonight. Coastal flooding of 2 to 3 feet above ground level is expected along low lying areas of the coast, bay and sounds during periods of high tide.
