General Information

Corrected to add date this element will be available via SOAP Service. See second paragraph below for details.

Effective July 8, 2008 at 1400 UTC – Hazards element to be added to the National Digital Forecast Database in experimental status for the CONUS; Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands; Hawaii; Guam; and Alaska (subset of hazards)

QPF, Snow Amount, and Sky Cover to become operational
in NDFD on this same date:
See TIN08-50
Implementation details for QPF, Snow Amount, Sky Cover elements

On July 8, 2008 at 1400 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the NWS will begin providing Hazards element in the National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) in experimental status.  Watches, warnings, and advisories prepared by NWS Weather Forecast Offices, the Storm Prediction Center and the Tropical Prediction Center will be included in this new element (see Appendix A for an explicit list of included hazards).  This element will be available for the conterminous U.S. (CONUS); the 16 pre-defined CONUS subsectors; Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands; Hawaii; Guam; and Alaska (subset of hazards).

Users of NDFD XML via SOAP will be able to access this element one week later on July 15, 2008.

A Product Description Document (PDD) for the experimental NDFD Hazards element will be posted before the implementation date in the Catalog of Experimental NWS Products and Services.  For a detailed listing of the watches, warnings, and advisories included in the Hazards element, refer to Appendix A of the PDD.

As with all NDFD elements, the Hazards element will be accessible from NDFD in several ways:

NOTE:  The NDFD Web Feature Service (WFS) will not support the hazard element encoded in Geography Markup Language (GML).

Customers who access the GRIB2 files via any method for one or more domain(s) may need to create, or update their, procedures and scripts to begin receiving the new hazards element from NDFD.  Detailed information for http and ftp users is included below.

Customers who use the NDFD XML via web service and/or NDFD images via web browser can use the same method they currently use to acquire this new element.  For XML users, this change will be transparent. Other than to select the new element, if desired; there is no distinction in the data itself between experimental and operational elements.  For graphics users, the image depicting the new element will include a label identifying this as an experimental element.

Customers who key on the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) super heading to access NDFD elements, can access WMO super headings for the Hazards element in NDFD in pdf. Questions or feedback?  Please e-mail nws.ndfd@noaa.gov or complete a Customer Survey:

Comments and feedback on the experimental Hazards element in NDFD will be accepted through January 8, 2009.

Instructions for ftp and http users:

On July 8, 2008 at 1400 UTC, files for the Hazards element in GRIB2 format will be added to the NDFD experimental http and ftp subdirectories for the CONUS; the 16 pre-defined NDFD CONUS subsectors; Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands; Hawaii; Guam; and Alaska (subset of hazards), as shown in Table 1.

The file name for the GRIB2 file for the hazards element within each subdirectory will be ds.wwa.bin.
