NDFD files were split into files for Days 1-3 and Days 4-7 on September 6, 2006

In the National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD), each forecast element file currently contains forecasts for up to 7 days ( follow this link and scroll down to “Description of NDFD Contents” for details). All forecast element files are currently created and posted at the same time each hour.  This can produce files that are too large for reliable data transfers. It also forces customers to download up to 7 days of data (up to 12 megabyte files) even if they are only interested in a single day or hour.  To resolve these issues, the National Weather Service (NWS) is making the following changes:

On Wednesday, September 6, 2006 at 1400 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), or midnight Thursday September 7 local Guam time, all element files (both operational and experimental) for all in the NDFD will be split into smaller files covering Days 1 through 3 and separate files covering Days 4 through 7. New experimental and operational elements added to the NDFD after September 6, 2006 will be implemented in this same “split file” configuration. The format of the NDFD element files remain the same, as do the spatial and temporal resolution of the data.

Also, on or before September 6, 2006, all NDFD elements which extend to Days 4 through 7 will only be updated 4 times per day at 0000 UTC, 0600 UTC, 1200 UTC, and 1800 UTC. Beginning that day, there will be no need or advantage to access the NDFD elements for Days 4 through 7 more frequently than every 6 hours. What users are affected by splitting the NDFD element files into smaller files on September 6, 2006 at 1400 UTC?

This change primarily affects users who pull the NDFD elements from the NWS' anonymous file transfer protocol (ftp) server (see also Access Data via ftp) in Gridded Binary 2 (GRIB2) format.This includes ftp users pulling NDFD elements via the Internet and via the Family of Services' Server Access Service. NDFD element files for Days 1 through 3 and those for Days 4 through 7 will be posted in separate files on the NWS' ftp file server starting on September 6, 2006 at 1400 UTC. Specific changes for ftp users follow.

Any user keying on the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) superheadings of NDFD element files to parse the GRIB2 files will also be need to make adjustments, as new superheadings have been assigned to the Days 4 through 7 element files.

Users of NDFD graphics and NDFD in eXtensible Markup Language (XML) via web service do not need to change the methods they currently use to view or acquire NDFD elements after they are split into smaller files on September 6, 2006.  The only portion of this implementation which affects graphics and XML users is that NDFD elements for Days 4 through 7 will only be updated 4 times per day.After September 6, 2006, there will be no need or advantage to access those elements more frequently than every 6 hours. See the next paragraph for more details.

How often and at what times will the smaller files be made available?

With this change, the NDFD element files and graphics for Days 4 through 7 will only be updated 4 times per day at 0000 UTC, 0600 UTC, 1200 UTC, and 1800 UTC. The GRIB2 element files will be posted on the anonymous ftp file server at h+45 minutes rather than at the top of the following hour as they are now. For example, the Days 4 through 7 GRIB2 files currently posted at 1800 UTC will be posted at 1745 UTC once this change is implemented. The Days 1 through 3 NDFD element files and graphics will continue to be updated hourly.These NDFD element files in GRIB2 will be posted to the ftp file server at the top of the hour, as they are now.For example, Days 1 through 3 GRIB2 element files currently posted at 1800 UTC will continue to be posted at 1800 UTC once this change is implemented.

What are the benefits of this change?

Splitting each NDFD element file into smaller pieces benefits both the National Weather Service and users:

  • Smaller file sizes will make ftp access to NDFD element files more efficient and reliable
  • Days 4 through 7 elements will only be updated 4 times per day, reducing the number of times users will need to download these files
  • Staggered processing uses IT resources more efficiently (for both NWS and our customers)
  • Provides more opportunity for NWS forecasters to collaborate on significant weather events

Detailed instructions for users who acquire NDFD elements via ftp:

Users who pull any of the operational or experimental NDFD element files in GRIB2 format from the NWS anonymous ftp server, either via the Internet or via the Family of Services' Server Access Service, will need to update their procedures and/or scripts to ensure continued access to the operational and/or experimental NDFD elements of interest. A new subdirectory will be added to the URLs used to download NDFD element files via ftp. New WMO superheadings will also be implemented within the NDFD element files as part of this change.

The new ftp subdirectory, VP.###-+++, will be added to the end of the current ftp path for each element for each domain. VP stands for “valid period” and ### and +++ represent the forecast days covered by each element file. In the case of the NDFD element files, the new subdirectory will be one of the following:

VP.001-003          for Days 1 through 3
VP.004-007          for Days 4 through 7

NOTE: Some NDFD elements are not available beyond 2 or 3 days, so not all elements will be posted in the new subdirectory covering Days 4 through 7. For example, precipitation amount (QPF) and snow amount are only available for 3 and 2 days, respectively.Similarly, even if an element appears in the new Days 4 through 7 ftp subdirectory, it may only cover a portion of the time period.For example, significant wave height in NDFD only extends through 5 days.

There will be no overlap of data between the current ftp file directory structure (click on NDFD files tab) and the new ftp file directory structure being implemented on September 6 at 1400 UTC. After 1400 UTC, the NDFD element files will only be accessible by using the appropriate new subdirectory path(s). Obsolete NDFD element files will also be deleted from the “old” subdirectories between 1300 and 1400 UTC on September 6.
