Why Strategic Planning is Important

The National Weather Service, like any major organization, has many resource decisions that need to be made years in advance. Planning requires the staff and managers to consider how things have changed, are changing and will change in the future.

There are many complex scientific and technological challenges that must be overcome. Strategic Plans are designed to walk an organization through the process of considering all of the challenges and opportunities toward setting goals and objectives that will help accomplish a vision. When all of these parts are successful, the organization is equipped to complete its mission. For the National Weather Service, that mission is to protect lives and property and enhance the economy.
