National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

In 1894, Congress declared the first Monday of each September a federal holiday in honor of the working class.

Although Labor Day was first celebrated in New York in 1882 and several states including Colorado, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts passed state laws declaring Labor Day a state holiday, it took 12 years for the U.S. Congress to pass the national law.
