National Weather Service Pittsburgh
Summer Student Volunteer Program

National Weather Service Student Volunteer Collage    The National Weather Service Pittsburgh Weather Forecast Office offers an opportunity for all active meteorology majoring students to experience the life and career of a National Weather Service meteorologist during summer. As an unpaid, student volunteer, a selected individual will gain valuable insight into all aspects of an operational meteorologist including learning about our upper air program and becoming certified to launch weather balloons(*); interacting with our forecasting software while developing a deeper understanding of the forecast process; gaining greater awareness about the range of duties a meteorologist has in supporting key partners; and so much more!

For the summer of 2024 period, the application period has CLOSED. Thank you to all who applied!

If the timing or location of our program doesn't quite work for you, be sure to check out the National Weather Service Student Opportunities page to see other offices' programs or other opportunities throughout the agency. If you have any other questions about this opportunity, you can contact Matthew Kramar or Jason Frazier.

(*) - Due to the ongoing pandemic, some aspects of the student volunteer program may not be able to be accomplished if policy dictates the experience be done remotely. Our staff will do everything in our power to give students as complete experience of the NWS career as possible.
