December of 2017 was another generally warm and dry month across south central and southeast Colorado, with a few  weather systems and associated cold fronts moving across the region through out the month. These weather systems brought some big temperature swings, especially across the eastern plains, along with some light snow across the region. For the month as a whole, above to well above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation were experienced across south central and southeast Colorado, save for at or above normal precipitation across portions of the Central Mountains.

The preliminary average temperature in Alamosa through out the month of December was 25.5 degrees. This is 7.6 degrees above normal and makes December of 2017 the 5th warmest December on record. This , however, remains well behind the average December temperature of 28.1 degrees, recorded in December of 1980. Alamosa recorded 0.14 inches of precipitation through the month of December, which is 0.21 inches below normal.  Alamosa recorded 1.3 inches of snow through out the month of December, which is 3.2 inches below normal.  Alamosa has recorded 1.7 inches of snow through the 2017-2018 Season thus far, which is 8.6 inches below normal to date. Alamosa tied or set 5 new record highs through out the month of December. 

 

The preliminary average temperature in Colorado Springs for the past month of December was 33.4 degrees, which is 3.6 degrees above normal.  Colorado Springs recorded only 0.01 inches of precipitation through out the month of December. This is 0.33 inches below normal and makes December of 2017 tied with December of 1922 as the 6th driest December on record, just behind a trace of precipitation recorded through out December of 1995, 1970, 1931, 1917 and 1907. Colorado Springs recorded 0.9 inches of snow through out the month of December, which is 4.8 inches below normal. Colorado Springs has recorded 2.5 inches of snow through the 2017-18 Season thus far, which is 11.0 inches below normal to date.  Colorado Springs set 1 new record high temperature through out the month of December.  

 

The preliminary average temperature in Pueblo through out the month of December was 32.9 degrees, which is 2.8 degrees above normal.  Pueblo only recorded 0.01 inches of precipitation through the month of December. This is 0.37 inches below normal and makes December of 2017, tied with December of 1980 and 1957, as the 9th driest December on record, just behind a trace of precipitation recorded in December of 1995, 1993, 1970, 1959, 1949, 1922, 1906 and 1890.  Pueblo recorded 0.6 inches of snow through out the month of December, which is 4.9 inches below normal.  Pueblo has recorded  2.0 inches of snow through the 2017-18 Season thus far, which is 9.5 inches below normal to date.  Pueblo set 1 new record high temperature through out the month of December.  

 

Looking ahead into January, in Alamosa,  the average high and low temperature of 34 degrees and -2 degrees on January 1st, warm to 36 degrees and 0 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of January in Alamosa is 16.3 degrees. Alamosa averages 0.26 inches of precipitation and 4 inches of snow through out the month of January.  On average, January is tied with February as the driest months of the year in Alamosa. 

In Colorado Springs, the average high and low temperature of 43 degrees and 17 degrees on January 1st, warm to 43 degrees and 18 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of January in Colorado Springs is 30.5 degrees. Colorado Springs averages 0.32 inches of precipitation and 5.6 inches of snow through out the month of January.  On average, January is the driest month of the year in Colorado Springs.   

In Pueblo,  the average high and low temperature of 46 degrees and 14 degrees on January 1st, warm to 48 degrees and 15 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of January in Pueblo is 30.5 degrees. Pueblo averages 0.35 inches of precipitation and 6.5 inches of snow through out the month of January. On average, January is the second driest month of the year in Pueblo.
