  Overview

The 3rd in a series of 4 quick moving Pacific storm systems brought significant rain and snow to western Wyoming especially from Star Valley to the Upper Green River Basin into the Wind River Mountains. Rain quickly changed to snow in the western Valleys Sunday evening with snowfall rates between 1 to 2 inches an hour observed. 12 to 15 inches of snow was observed in the Pinedale area. The intensity of the precipitation was aided by lift associated with a strong 160-180 MPH Jet Stream across northern Utah into southwest Wyoming. This placement of the Jet Stream put west-central Wyoming in a very favorable location for heavy precipitation. Also strong to high wind was observed over central Wyoming. The Lander Airport observed a 73 MPH wind gust at 256 PM MDT on October 17th.
