Severe Storms, Heavy Rain and a Brief Tornado Impact the Missouri Ozarks and Southeast Kansas

 

Strong to severe thunderstorms brought strong winds and very heavy rainfall to portions of the Missouri Ozarks and southeast Kansas from Wednesday evening August 19th into the early morning hours on Thursday August 20th.  These storms produced localized wind damage, flash flooding and a brief EF-1 tornado.

...TORNADO DAMAGE RATED EF-1 IN FAR NORTHERN TEXAS COUNTY...

A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE STORM SURVEY TEAM HAS CONCLUDED AN
ASSESSMENT OF THE STORM DAMAGE THAT OCCURRED ACROSS NORTHERN TEXAS
COUNTY DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF AUGUST 20TH...2009.

A TORNADO PRODUCED DAMAGE RATED EF-1 ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE
ACROSS FAR NORTHERN TEXAS COUNTY. THE BEGINNING OF THE PATH WAS
APPROXIMATELY SIX MILES NORTH OF THE TOWN OF ROBY WHERE A MOBILE
HOME WAS ROLLED AND DESTROYED JUST WEST OF HIGHWAY AW. A RESIDENT
OF THE MOBILE HOME WAS INJURED. THE APPROXIMATE WIND SPEED
ASSOCIATED WITH THIS DAMAGE WAS BETWEEN 95 AND 100 MPH. THE
TORNADO THEN TRAVELED APPROXIMATELY THREE QUARTERS OF A MILE TO
THE EAST SOUTHEAST WHERE TWO FRAME HOMES AND AN OUTBUILDING
SUSTAINED ROOF DAMAGE. NUMEROUS TREES WERE UPROOTED ALONG THE PATH
WITH DAMAGE LIMITED TO LARGE LIMBS NEAR THE END OF THE PATH.
