National Verification Program


AWIPS Verification Program (AVP)

  • Compares performance of MDL's MOS Guidance with National Weather Service's local forecasts.

  • Verification statistics are computed for 8 weather elements for approximately 130 stations in the conterminous United States.

  • Scores are computed for the cool season (October - March) and the warm season (April - September).



    • MAX Temperature Verification Results

    Comparison of local and objective forecasts of "Today's Max" (24-h projection) and "Tomorrow's Max" (48-h projection) Temperature.

    Mean Absolute Error computed for approximately 130 stations in the conterminous U.S.

    Verification results since 1970 are shown for the cool season and the warm season .


    MIN Temperature Verification Results

    Comparison of local and objective forecasts of "Tonight's Min" (24-h projection) and "Tomorrow night's Min" (48-h projection) Temperature.

    Mean Absolute Error computed for approximately 130 stations in the conterminous U.S.

    Verification results since 1970 are shown for the cool season and the warm season .


    PoP Verification Results

    Comparison of local and objective probability of precipitation forecasts for "Today" (24-h projection) and "Tomorrow" (48-h projection)

    % Improvement over Climate computed since 1972 for approximately 130 stations in the conterminous U.S. results are shown for the cool season and the warm season
