February 7, 2016 - Hurricane force winds buffeted western South Dakota and portions of northeastern Wyoming today. The highest wind gust was 78 MPH near Scenic and Wicksville, SD.
The winds were caused by a deep Alberta Clipper-like surface low pressure system over the upper midwest. A very tight pressure gradient extended west into the Dakotas. We are compiling a final list of peak wind gusts, but do have a prelimary report below.
