February 2018 was one of the coldest and snowiest in Rapid City history.

The Rapid City Regional Airport recorded the lowest average temperature for any February since 1942 with 13.0 degrees. The previous coldest February was 14.4 degrees in 1989. The downtown National Weather Service office had an average temperature of 16.3 degrees, which ranks as the sixth coldest February. The coldest February stands as a brutal 1.4 degrees in 1936.

The airport measured 16.8 inches of snow during the month, which ranks as the fourth snowiest February. The greatest February snowfall is 23.7 inches in 1953. Downtown Rapid City's 19.9 inches of snow is the third greatest February total snowfall. 2001 received the most snow with 22.0 inches falling during the month. The average February snowfall is 5.8 inches at the airport and 7.4 inches downtown.

 

Gillette, Wyoming lowest average temperatures did not break any records and was ranked the 16th coldest. The coldest was in 1989 with an average low temperature of 11 degrees. 

Gillette, WY received 17.1 inches of snow during the month, which ranks as the 6th snowiest February. The greatest February snowfall is 21 inches in 1953.
