Rapid City Doppler RadarSeptember 22 - The Rapid City Doppler weather radar upgrade has been completed and data is available again at https://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=udx. The upgrade included installation of a new signal processor; which replaces obsolete technology, improves processing speed and data quality, provides added functionality, and increases IT security.  This is the first of four major upgrades planned in the next five years to replace and refurbish major components of the 20 year old radars to keep them operational beyond 2030. The $150 million cost of the upgrades is funded the three Federal agencies that use these radars: The National Weather Service, United States Air Force, and Federal Aviation Administration. The three other service life extension projects include refurbishing the transmitter, pedestal, and equipment shelters.
