Low pressure emerged from the Rockies and tracked northeast to produce heavy snow across much of South Dakota on the evening of December 15th into the afternoon on the 16th. Highest amounts fell across far south central and southwestern parts of the state where a heavy band persisted for much of the evening, but other areas further northeast picked up appreciable amounts as well when a heavy but less persistant band pushed north. A secondary, more localized, area of snow then developed across far southeastern South Dakota and moved into southwestern Minnesota. Thundersnow was reported with this intense area of snowfall. Winds gusts picked up into the 30-40 mph range on the 16th and blew the newly-fallen snow around. Blizzard conditions were not widely observed.

Below are snowfall totals from this system.
