Enhanced Risk for Severe Thunderstorms Across the Upper Midwest; Flash Flooding Possible from the Upper Midwest to Southern Plains and Desert Southwest Through Friday

Portions of the Upper Midwest will see an increased threat for severe thunderstorms through this evening, with a few strong tornadoes possible. The same region remains on alert for additional flash flood concerns. Heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding across the Desert Southwest today, and Southern Plains by Friday. Finally, Major-to-record river flooding continues across the Carolinas. Read More >

Significant rainfall fell over a large portion of central and northeastern South Dakota from August 22nd through August 24th. The heaviest rainfall appeared to fall in two primary zones - one across western Corson and Dewey Counties, and a second area across Faulk, Edmunds, McPherson and Brown Counties. Rainfall in these corridors generally ranged from 2 to 5 inches - with some localized flooding reported. As is typical with thunderstorms - a few areas were "missed" - with an inch or less of rainfall reported.

Figure 1 is a preliminary rainfall graphic using a variety of reporting sources.  A tabular listing of select rainfall reports is also below.
