January 2014 was an extreme month across central and northeast South Dakota as well as west central Minnesota.  Temperature extremes along with very strong winds dominated the month with several blizzards, high wind, and wind chill events.  Highs for the month were in 40s and 50s with lows in teens and 20s below zero. The average temperatures for the month were from 3 to 4 degrees below normal for the eastern part of the region with generally near normal temperatures for locations out west.  Much of central South Dakota had very little snow throughout January with only 1 to 3 inches of snowfall or from 2 to 5 inches below normal. The eastern part of the region was closer to normal with 5 to 7 inches of snowfall.  The frequent strong winds blew this snow around causing whiteout conditions and numerous travel problems east in the region. The Arctic air and strong winds also brought several periods of bitter wind chills to the region.
