The winter of 2009/2010 has featured quite a run of cold high temperatures over much the Northern Plains, including South Dakota and west-central Minnesota.

In fact, on February 23rd, 2010, Pierre set a new record with a streak of 84 consecutive days when high temperatures have failed to reach 40F. Aberdeen’s streak of sub-40F degree days has also tallied 84 days, however this is only 8th longest streak on record. To put it differently, the last time Pierre and Aberdeen reached 40F was December 1st, 2009.

Although somewhat warmer weather is forecast for later this week, high temperature are expected to remain below 40F, keeping the streak alive at both locations. Not good news for those of us who may be thinking spring!
