⚠️ Cold front tonight will have wind gusts over 60mph in the hatched area, possibly exceeding 70mph. Most post frontal impacts in the hatched area between midnight and 4AM. Critical Fire Weather continues and new fires can still spark, even though its dark now.⚠️
Extreme fire weather conditions are expected today with the highest fire weather threat across the southeastern two thirds of the combined Panhandles. In fact, days like today are the ones that historically can lead to large wildfires and even wildfire outbreaks in the region given the combination of very strong winds, warm temperatures, low relative humidity and dry grass fuels. Given this it is critical we all eliminate any activities or actions that could create sparks. Driving into tall grass, dragging chains, welding, and grinding metal can ignite wildfires that can and will burn out of control on days like today.
Strong southwest to west winds will continue through the evening. Winds will turn north and remain strong as a cold front moves across the area overnight. There is a 10 to 40% chance of wind gusts of 70 mph or greater across the northern Panhandles after midnight associated with the combination of the front and the low pressure system moving across the area. Winds will be slow to subside on Wednesday.
Some light rain may wrap around the low pressure system moving across the area overnight. Chance of rain tonight will range from 10-20 percent across the central Texas Panhandle to 40-60% near the Oklahoma/Kansas state line. Rainfall amounts should generally be less than 1/10 inch.
Tonight's cold front will bring much colder temperatures to the area. Lows will be near freezing, but with strong winds, the apparent temperature will be in the teens and 20s Wednesday morning. Highs will only reach the 40s and 50s.
We are no strangers to dust around here, but how bad can it get and how fast? Strong winds and warm temperatures can aid in spreading lots of dust in a short amount of time. Road conditions can devolve quickly, and create dangerous situations! Stay up to date with the forecast so you can be prepared when roads turn for the worst.
Be careful not to start wildfires.
